Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy Release Date
The first act of Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy launched on February 4, 2025, with subsequent acts rolling out over the following months until summer 2025.
Focusing on Hive Pantheons, Heresy wraps up the Light and Darkness Saga while paving the way for the upcoming Codename: Frontiers expansions, Apollo and Behemoth.
New Content
For Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy, Bungie is bringing back the weekly content and story delivery format. While a large portion of content will drop on day one, the episode will gradually evolve over time, keeping players engaged throughout its entire duration.
Let’s take a look at what’s in store!
The Nether
The Nether is a new three-player core activity that takes us back to the Dreadnaught’s patrol zones. Players will once again board Oryx’s flagship, exploring its depths and purging Hive and Dread corruption.
The activity introduces a rogue-lite experience with no health regeneration and limited ammo drops. Players start with +300 bonus HP and +75 shield value, but revive tokens are limited.
A major feature of The Nether is special buffs called Boons. There are three types:
- Minor: Small stat boosts that stack up to 10, making you stronger over time.
- Major: Larger gameplay modifiers affecting abilities, like Stasis Slide (releasing a big Stasis burst) or Apostate’s Ward (reducing incoming damage when wearing Episodic armor).
- Corrupted: Powerful buffs with a major drawback, such as increased elemental damage but drained abilities or boosted outgoing damage but increased incoming damage.
The activity features randomized encounters and objectives, with multiple ways to engage. You can choose between solo-type, patrol-style runs, a basic matchmade version, or the most challenging Expert variant. Rewards drop after each completed bubble, so players can hop in for a quick run or push through the entire activity for bigger payouts.
New Weapons
Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy brings a slew of new weapons will be coming to the main in-game activities. For Nightfall rewards, there will be the Lotus-Eater rocket-assisted sidearm and The Palindrome hand cannon. In Vanguard Ops, we’re getting the Cynosure rocket launcher, while Gambit will feature the Backfang glaive. In Crucible, players will get Joxer’s Longsword pulse rifle and also Redrix’s Estoc pulse rifle for the Competitive playlist.
In Trials of Osiris, the Exalted Truth hand cannon makes a return, along with a new sniper rifle, Keen Thistle. Later in the episode, The Inquisitor shotgun will also be added to the rewards pool.
Weapons from Vault of Glass will get a rework and be available in craftable versions. Season of Arrivals weapons are coming back as well.
The Barrow-Dyad SMG and Loadstar trace rifle will be added to the Exotic roster.
Additionally, the episode will introduce the Heretical Arsenal—a new tier of Dreadnought-themed seasonal weapons, available in Adept variants with unique skins and additional perks. For now, only the Psychopomp grenade launcher and Adamantite auto rifle have been revealed, both farmable from the Dreadnaught. Other Heretical weapons will also be added, and players can earn them by completing seasonal challenges.
New Armor
Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy will bring new seasonal armor, including the Hive-themed Navigator set, as well as Eris Morn-inspired set for all three classes. New armor from Trials of Osiris will also be available for players to earn.
There will be no new Exotic armor in this episode, as the devs decided to focus more on improving and refining existing sets.
A Star Wars collaboration will give us three new sets as well: Covert Ranger for Hunters, Shock Enforcer for Titans, and Royal Protector for Warlocks. These will be available on Eververse when Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy launches.
Sundered Doctrine
Launching on February 7, Sundered Doctrine is a new dungeon that takes Guardians back to Rhulk’s Pyramid Ship.
For its first 48 hours, the instance will go into a Contest Mode featuring tougher enemies and enrage mechanics. To access Contest Mode, you’ll need to get The Final Shape dungeon key and the new quest, The Drowning Labyrinth. The recommended Power Level is 1,995.
Completing the dungeon during Contest Mode rewards you with an exclusive emblem and a new Exotic. Also, you can earn the Trigonic Amber emblem if you tune in to the Race stream on Twitch.
Bolt Charge
Bolt Charge is a new Arc Keyword that grants a positive stacking buff. Stacks are gained from various sources, and as long as you have at least one stack, dealing damage with any weapon builds up your Bolt Charge. Each time you gain a stack, you receive a chunk of melee energy. Once at the maximum charge of 10 stacks, your next ability unleashes a massive Arc bolt of lightning, striking the ground and frying anything in its path.
This new buff, along with significant Arc balance changes coming with Heresy, will greatly enhance the subclass, making Arc builds more competitive and viable in top-tier gameplay.
New Aspects
Each class is getting a new aspect with the Heresy update.
Nightstalker Hunter will receive On The Prowl. Whenever you go invisible, nearby enemies are marked as priority targets. When you take them down, your entire team gets ability energy, and you also receive boosts to weapon reload speed and stability. Also, on kill, the target explodes into a cloud of smoke, allowing you to go invisible again, thereby marking a new target.
For Striker Titans, we have Storm’s Keep, a new Barricade modification that makes the ability a bit more offensive. Any Barricade you drop now becomes electrified, and standing behind it will passively accumulate Bolt Charge for you and your allies. Firing your weapon behind the barricade will discharge the stacks.
Stormcaller Warlocks will get Ionic Sentry. By taking down targets with Arc abilities or weapons, you charge the aspect up. Once the charge is full, it grants a bonus grenade that blinds on impact and spawns a small Arc turret that chains to enemies. Every time it zaps, you accumulate a stack of Bolt Charge.
Content Changes
The upcoming episode will bring significant changes and quality-of-life updates that will reshape the game’s landscape and meta.
Trials of Osiris Rework
Trials of Osiris are getting a big shake-up, primarily aimed at enhancing the Lighthouse experience to make the mode more approachable for casual players.
You no longer need to win seven games in a row to get to the Lighthouse. Instead, Trials will now be framed more around win streaks—the more you manage to maintain, the better the rewards you’ll earn. The goal is to reward all players while giving exclusive loot to those who demonstrate the highest skill. To achieve this, players are offered different experiences, with separate passages for casual PvPers (Trials of Osiris Passage) and those who play more competitively (Lighthouse Passage upgraded to Completed Lighthouse Passage and later Flawless Passage).
New armor sets for each class will be available, with pieces earned weekly through Challenges or Lighthouse chests. There’ll also be a host of new cosmetics for players to grab for achieving high win streaks or Flawless Passage completions.
Heresy’s first Trials of Osiris will go live on February 14.
Weapon and Armor Updates
Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy rolls out massive changes affecting both individual weapons and entire archetypes and subfamilies. Overall, these updates aim to give underused weapons a well-deserved boost while slightly nerfing overpowered ones to create a more balanced gameplay experience. For example, D.A.R.C.I. receives a brand-new Catalyst; Lorentz Driver, Delicate Tomb, Dead Messenger, and other Exotics are getting various adjustments as well. PvE damage will be generally improved, Glaives will see significant buffs, and there’ll also be tweaks to Aggressive Frame Fusion Rifles, Support-Frame Auto Rifles, and Rocket-Assisted Frame Sidearms.
Exotic armor will also see some reworks, with changes applied to Citan’s Ramparts, Gwisin Vest, Foetracer, Eternal Warrior, Stormdancer’s Brace, and other pieces.
Now that Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy has arrived, players can dive into all the new content, from The Nether activity to powerful new weapons and armor. With major gameplay changes, Trials reworks, and fresh challenges ahead, Destiny 2 Episode: Heresy is set to keep Guardians engaged for months to come.
