Miracle cure or just another juice?
I am not sure that drinking 16 ounces of organic celery juice every morning has the health benefits people claim for it, but I have heard a lot about it from friends from New York, India, Europe, England and Asia. I want you to be ‘in the know’.
Proponents contend that drinking celery juice can heal autoimmune diseases, reduce inflammation, clear up skin, fix digestive issues, end chronic fatigue, reduce viruses and bad bacteria, lower blood pressure, improve thyroid function and clean heavy metals out of one’s liver.
The celery juice craze started with Anthony Williams, a young man without a medical degree. Anthony claims the title of ‘medical medium’. He attributes his insights to divine inspiration which instructed him to tell people about the health benefits of celery juice. His book is Medical Medium Celery Juice: The Most Powerful Medicine of Our Time Healing Millions Worldwide, $10.24. I know a number of reasonable people who have ‘suspended their disbelief’, tried celery juice and report feeling better. Some medical professionals have advised patients to try celery juice, especially to reduce pain from arthritis. GOOP recommends drinking celery juice. Sylvester Stallone, Novak Djokovic, Gwenyth Paltrow, Robert Dinero and Jennifer Aniston are among its proponents.
The ‘prescription’ is to drink 16 ounces of celery juice made from cleaned, organic celery stalks – nothing added – not water, other juice, herbs, sweetener – nothing. Drink it on an empty stomach and wait at least fifteen minutes before you eat or drink anything else. Note: The sudden introduction of 16 ounces of liquid, salts and fiber first thing in the morning may speed up the throughput in your digestive tract for the first few days. Plan accordingly.

I have not found medical evidence supporting celery juice as a miracle cure, but there is little evidence against it. It is about 94% water and drinking nearly two cups of water every morning is generally said to be beneficial. Nutritionists report that organic celery is a healthy juice and has more vitamin K and potassium than carrot and tomato juice, but each vegetable has its own benefits and most experts suggest that juice made from a blend of vegetables is healthier than any one vegetable. The benefits of celery juice are said to come from the salts which occur naturally in the celery which help the body balance fluids. I have read that there are 215 milligrams of sodium in the sixteen ounces of celery juice. The US Center for Disease Control recommends that individuals consume less than 2,300 mgs of sodium each day. You need to consider whether you want to use up 10% of your allowance before breakfast. Celery may have anti-inflammatory benefits like spinach and kale.
There are a proliferation of juice bars in the places I spend time and many of them offer celery juice. Check to confirm that they use organic celery.
