If the mere thought of summer shorts sends shivers down your spine, perhaps you haven’t tried a Bermuda short? Also known as walk shorts or dress shorts, a traditional Bermuda short is a type of short trouser with a hemline that sits around 1 inch (2.5 cm give or take) above the knee. But like everything in fashion, there’s always new takes on a trend so you can add ‘on the knee’ and ‘just under the knee’ to that definition as well in 2020.
The name Bermuda shorts originates from their popularity in Bermuda: a British Overseas Territory where they are considered appropriate business attire for men, but have clearly made it into the wardrobes of women since then!
Bermuda shorts can be so versatile and offer a modern aesthetic that can be anywhere from cool to sexy, modest to chic, casual yet professional. And for summer 2020 you’ll be seeing the style featured heavily in your local retailers.
So how do you style a Bermuda short and how are they different from ‘regular’ shorts? The beauty of this length is that it provides the upper leg with more coverage, which can be a lot more appealing for many women who don’t like to expose their thighs.
The Bermuda short can be worn relaxed or tapered. Think of your favourite skinny pair of jeans cut off just above the knee. That’s a really flattering length and a look for those still comfortable showing off their legs, knees down.
The other advantage of the Bermuda short is that they can be worn with flats or heels, meaning they’re a great desk to dinner option. So for those who feel the length is a bit ‘dowdy’ simply add a heel (wedge, sandal, pump) and you have a modern looking short to take you from the office to Friday night drinks.
I also think Bermuda shorts lend themselves well to being ‘dressed up’. Team them with a tank, blazer and heels, a cami and strappy sandals or a chunky knit and knee high boots (in winter) Finding the perfect length of Bermuda short will be different for everyone, but here are some easy tips to follow:
- Look at yourself in a full-length mirror
- Tuck into the shorts (or at least the front tuck)
- Ask yourself, ‘how do I feel about the length?” “do I like how my legs look?” “does the length flatter my legs?”
- If the answer is no to any of the above, put on some heels
- If the answer is still no, have a play with the length, i.e. cuff the shorts to make them shorter or wriggle them down to make them longer. Any difference?
- Length can always be adjusted and it may just be that YOUR best length is a touch shorter (especially if you’re petite) or in my case being tall, a touch longer (if there’s enough hem to take down)
- It’s important to find a length and style that works for YOU, keeping in mind the style is designed to be a longer length short… so to keep with the look at ‘feel’ of the Bermuda short, just don’t go TOO short!
