Storing and organizing your makeup collection efficiently can help you find products quickly and maintain their quality over time. Here are some steps and tips to consider:
1. Declutter: Before you start organizing, go through your collection and declutter. Get rid of expired or unused products to create a more manageable collection. This will take some time for those who have a mound of makeup and brushes like me.
2. Categorize: Divide your makeup into categories based on product type (e.g., foundation, lipstick, eyeshadow, etc.). This will help you locate items more easily. I do this now. I put all lip glosses together, place all lipsticks together, etc.
3. Storage Containers: Invest in good-quality storage containers or organizers that suit your space and preferences. Clear acrylic containers are popular as they allow you to see the contents.
4. Consider Frequency of Use: Place frequently used products in easily accessible areas and less-used items in deeper or higher shelves.
5. Display: If you have items with beautiful packaging or special collections, consider displaying them on a vanity or shelf. This can also serve as decor. Getting a cute ceramic mug, would hold the brushes you use the most.
6. Drawers and Dividers: Drawers and dividers are great for keeping products separate and organized. You can use them to sort products within each category. I like doing this. I went to WalMart and got some clear, plastic drawers. Then I labeled the drawers according to what was in each one.
7. Labeling: Labeling containers or shelves can help you quickly locate items. You can use labels or even labels which are designed for a more polished look. I do this. I get the cute shaped and color labels (i.e. Michaels) and label the boxes such as “blush”; “foundation” and “black liner”.
8. Color Coding: Consider organizing your makeup by color, especially for products like eyeshadows and lipsticks. This can make it easier to find coordinating shades.
9. Travel and On-the-Go: Have a separate pouch or bag for travel-sized items or products you often take on the go. This is great if you flying and need to touch up.
10. Rotation: Rotate your collection seasonally to ensure you’re using all your products. Put some products in storage for a while and bring others to the forefront.
11. Keep it Clean: Regularly clean your storage containers to prevent dust and product buildup. Wipe down surfaces and containers as needed. I like using Dawn dish soap. It cleanses the brushes more than other brands.
12. Makeup Brushes: Store makeup brushes separately in holders or cups to keep them clean and accessible. I keep my eye brushes together and my powder brushes together. I know you may be needing more storage than necessary. But it is great when you need a certain brush and don’t have the time to dig.
13. Makeup Wipes and Removers: Keep makeup wipes, removers, and other skincare products within easy reach, especially if you remove your makeup at your vanity. I use these in the bathroom where they are closer to my skincare products.
14. Lighting: Ensure good lighting in your makeup storage area. Natural light is ideal, but if that’s not possible, invest in bright, white LED lighting. Personally I like the white LED lighting. I can see more clear with this type of lighting.
15. Periodic Maintenance: Set aside time every few months to reevaluate your collection, discard expired products, and reorganize if necessary. This is especially necessary with eye makeup. Old eye makeup can cause eye infections such as pink eye, which is highly contagious.
