Did you think that maxi dresses are just for summer? Think again. While these floor-length lovelies are popularly worn during warmer weather, with proper layering maxi dresses can make a warm and stylish winter outfit.
You may need to put the back-less, thin-strapped varieties away until next summer, but there are full-sleeved, knitted ones that work well for chilly temperatures. As a wardrobe stylist, I show clients regularly how to maximise their existing pieces ~ you just have to show some creativity! Here are some ways to wear a maxi dress this winter that will keep you feeling warm and snug and looking every bit as stylish.
With a leather jacket
With its floor-length finish, finding a jacket to wear with a maxi dress can be quite a challenge. Longline coats can drown you in fabric, whilst a cropped coat can look wrong too! A waist-synching leather jacket is perfect for maxi dresses because it looks proportionate and flatters your figure. Wear a pair of this season’s must have combat boots or white sneakers to complete this rebellious, street style outfit.
Maxi dress with fur (or faux) vest
For a snug and cosy look, go for a knitted or floral long-sleeved maxi dress and wear a sleeveless faux-fur vest or gillet on top. The gillet gives the look a boho vibe while adding a winter styling element to the dress. Complete your look with a pair of ankle boots, a winter fedora and statement sunglasses.
Midi dresses
What about midi dresses that fall somewhere between floor length and midi length? Keep your legs warm by wearing thick tights underneath and knee length boots. I love the look of a floaty or knit midi dress with a beautiful knee length boot in winter. Complete the look with a stunning long coat for a perfectly styled winter outfit.
Turtlenecks
Layering is one of the best ways to stay warm in winter. For maxi dresses, you can wear a thin, thermal turtleneck underneath a summer maxi dress or wear a knitted turtleneck jumper on top. If you’re wearing a jumper on top, make sure it’s not too long or too short. Check out my styling hack on how to wear a jumper over a dress here!
Shirt dresses
A shirt dress in winter? Why not? A shirt dress is the ultimate layer piece in winter because it’s so versatile to style. With a button down shirt dress you have the option to wear buttoned, half buttoned or completely open like a long coat!
Team over your turtleneck and leather leggings but wearing your shirt dressed unbuttoned from the waist down. One of my favourite looks is to wear a shirt dress over a pair of cropped jeans and ankle boots for a unique, stylised look. Add a shorter piece of outerwear for a great layered look. Watch my video on how to style a shirt dress for all seasons.
Winter doesn’t have to be grey and dreary. With the right pieces for layering, you can still wear your bright and colourful maxi dresses even as temperatures drop. You’ll be a burst of colour in this otherwise gloomy weather. How refreshing!
