It is summer time so bring out your summer clothes, sunscreen, and pool floaties. Summer time means the heat is rising and, most likely, your diet will change. I’m not saying you will eat the best foods, but hey, it’s summer you’ve been doing good all year its time to let loose and live a little, yeah?
Well, that’s what you’re going to do. Eat what you want and not have a care in the world. That’s the definition of summer to me. When I think of summer, I think of cookouts and firing up that grill and putting the most delicious foods on there and letting my taste buds and stomach have the best time of their lives.
Last time we discussed good foods to have during summer, but now we are going to talk about healthy foods that you should have. The days are longer and hotter, and we need to remember to think about what we put in our bodies to make them last longer during those summer heats.
So, here are some foods that are beneficial to your body during the summer.
FRUITS
Always make sure you stock up on fruit during the summer time because it’s a refreshing treat that contains natural sugar so you don’t have to worry as much about it having a negative effect on your health.
Berries: Make sure you buy those berries at the grocery store because they will benefit you in the long run. You don’t have to have them by themselves if you want a way to incorporate them into your meals, make a smoothie or juice, or some platter that may include all of your berries. Berries are high in antioxidants which will help neutralize any toxins in your body.
Melon: Whatever melon you can find will be the melon of your dreams. Watermelon is the go-to melon for everyone but widen your range of melons and try others like cantaloupe or honeydew. You will be surprised to find that you will probably like them. When someone told me about to honeydew, I didn’t think I was going to like it all, but now its one of the melons that I eat most.
Avocado: Yes, an avocado is a fruit. Please don’t fight me on this. They are another food that you can eat during the summer that will refuel your body. So I guess this gives you an excuse to eat guacamole all the time and have avocado toast every morning. Avocado is high in healthy fats and contains little to no carbs, making it a great option for almost any diet.
VEGETABLES
You know how your parents told you to eat your vegetables and you will become big and strong? I don’t know how many times i’m going to tell you this, but your parents were right.
Tomato: Tomatoes are high in essential nutrients that your body needs like lycopene—an antioxidant—and vitamins like vitamin C and vitamin K, which both act to help neutralize toxins. The acids in tomatoes make them good ingredients in skincare products, too, which is why you’ll find that a lot of natural skincare products contain tomato or tomato juice.
Cucumber: Cucumber is delicious and will make you feel refreshed and energized after. I don’t like to do anything to my cucumber but season and bake them in the oven or grill them, or sometimes after a workout, I will eat them with peanut butter. Yeah, I know weird, but it’s good.
Greens: Eat your greens people as your parents told you so. When you think about it, putting some broccoli, spinach, or asparagus on the grill sounds like a summertime grilling party to me.
