With COVID-19 restrictions increasing and a more stressful than usual holiday season now in full-swing, some of us could use Netflix and chill time. We could use a distraction. Unfortunately, Netflix doesn’t have the most exciting of additions this week to lose your mind with. Following the release of Mank last week, Netflix ain’t topping that towering original release the rest of the year. Just revisit Mank again and again this week. Netflix has a few more high-profile movies left this year, but Mank was their mic drop to end 2020 with.
That next major release is a musical, The Prom. It’s directed by Ryan Murphy, who created American Horror Story and Nip/Tuck and signed a massive development deal with Netflix. Murphy’s deal is worth an estimated $300 million. The famous showrunner already produced Hollywood and Ratchet for Netflix. Both left critics mixed, but as per usual, audiences ate up what Murphy was serving. Murphy continues to produce content greater in their ratings than their quality.
However, his new movie, The Prom, is faring little better with critics… not with every critic, though. Known best for his late night-gig, James Corden’s performance has already been labeled insulting before the movie has even arrived on Netflix. People who’ve seen the movie have not been responding kindly to Corden’s performance. The performer is typically inoffensive, but in Prom, his creative choices as a gay character have sparked disgust and disdain.
Netflix has several other original releases coming out this week, including Alice in Borderland. For fans of the Manga, that’s exciting. The Japanese property has its fans, and the show looks high in terms of production quality. Hopefully, Alice in Borderland lives up to its fans’ expectations.
There are a few non-Netflix titles to check out as well that were practically made to be streamed. There’s a new action-thriller from director Tate Taylor starring Jessica Chastain. It’s called Ava, and it didn’t get a real theatrical release despite the star power involved. It was very poorly received, however, with only an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Then again, Chastain is a compelling actor, and Taylor has his moments as a director. Ma, for example, was a B-movie blast. Maybe Ava can provide some entertainment value. Another thriller worth checking out is Triple 9. It’s a mean and nasty crime movie that is kind of a mess but full of strong tension and charismatic performances. Directed by John Hillcoat, Triple 9 is a trashy crime movie elevated by Hillcoat’s brutal direction and committed performances, especially Woody Harrelson’s.
